Our Team

Our staff have extensive experience in delivering first aid and emergency medical response in the pre-hospital environment. All RemoteMed clinical staff undertake training and skills maintenance in providing emergency medical response in remote environments. Our team includes Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics and First Responders. We are outdoor experts - several of our team are leaders in Wilderness and Emergency Medicine having qualifications and experience in operating in austere environments.

We have strong expertise in emergency management, planning, logistics and operations in a range of situations including Search and Rescue, Fire and Health.

Duncan Maughan

B.App.Sci, MA, BN, GradCertNur(CardC), CCRN, MACN

Duncan is a Critical Care Registered Nurse with experience in cardiac, emergency and remote area nursing. With a background in fire and emergency management, Duncan came to the healthcare area by way of wilderness first aid courses. then certification as a Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician. Wide experience in pre-hospital care, incident management and search and rescue teams have all contributed to a passion for wilderness and remote medicine. Duncan is a volunteer cross-country ski patroller and an enthusiastic walker having explored many areas in Australia and overseas by way of human powered travel.

Noreen Krusel

BSc, MSc, PhD

Noreen has extensive experience travelling in Australia and overseas. With a Doctorate in climatology, she has a deep understanding of interactions between people and their environments. She is competent in the outdoors, being a former rogaining champion and has many years of bushwalking and cross-country skiing under her belt. She has organised and assisted with many events.

Kerryn Wratt

GRADDIPEMERHLTH (MP), B.PARAMEDICSTUDIES, DIPAMBPARASTUDIES, B.SCI(ZOOL)

Kerryn is an Intensive Care Paramedic based in Tasmania. He has led the development of wilderness medicine across Australia. In 2012 he was awarded a scholarship to investigate international models of medical response into wilderness settings, which subsequently informed Victoria’s paramedic wilderness response system. Kerryn introduced the Advanced Wilderness Life Support® course into Australia, has facilitated the Basic Wilderness Life Support course in Nepal and has volunteered with the Himalayan Rescue Association. Kerryn is a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. He is the founding president of the Australasian Wilderness and Expedition Medicine Society (AWEMS), the peak body for the development of wilderness medicine across Australasia. Kerryn also lead the establishment of St John Papua New Guinea’s Ambulance Special Operations Team in preparation for the APEC leaders’ summit in Port Moresby.

Kasia Grela

MBBS, FANZCA

Kasia is a specialist anaesthetist living in northern Tasmania. She works in public and private anaesthesia, has experience as a medical doctor on treks in Nepal as well as in the Australian ski fields. Kasia has volunteered in Papua New Guinea and in Nepal with the Himalayan Rescue Association. She was the founding Vice President of the Australasian Wilderness and Expedition Medicine Society and teaches Basic and Advanced Wilderness Life Support in Australia and overseas. Kasia is an APLS instructor and is also currently completing a Diploma of Mountain Medicine and Fellowship of Academy of Wilderness Medicine. In her spare time she enjoys gardening and hiking.

Sophie Ootes

MD, BA

Sophie Ootes is a Rural Generalist Registrar in South Australia, with passions for pre-hospital, emergency, general practice, and sports medicine. She is a founding member, former vice president, and 2 x conference convenor for the Australasian Wilderness & Expedition Medicine Society, and sits on various state and national sporting committees. Sophie loves to maintain a breadth of skills and has additional qualifications across wilderness, rescue, emergency, trauma, major incident management, and ultrasound. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Extreme Environment Medicine, and is working towards her Fellowship of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. She has also undertaken a month-long Wilderness & Expedition Medicine Residency Elective in Canada. Sophie teaches Advanced Wilderness Life Support, Wilderness Rescue Medicine, and Nepal Mountain Medicine courses, and opportunistically teaches and mentors in general practice and sports medicine. Sophie comes from a diverse academic background, also holding a B. Arts (International Pollitics / French Language) and has studied across Australia, UK, the Netherlands, France, and volunteered in the Philippines and Nepal. She is also an avid sportswoman, having represented Australia in her age group for cycling and triathlon.

Yazmin Symons

BM, BS (hons)

Yazmin works as a senior emergency medicine registrar in Australia. She is currently completing her Masters of Healthcare in Remote and Extreme Environments. She has her Advanced Wilderness Life Support, completed courses in Expedition medicine and Swiftwater Rescue (PRO-I). She enjoys the ability to combine her love for medicine with her love of the outdoors. On her days off she can be found hiking, camping or doing some overtime to finance her next holiday.
